KOTA SAMARAHAN: Although the Batang Samarahan Bridge is not officially open yet, residents in an round Kota Samarahan can hardly wait to use the bridge to return home from Kuching City.

A survey revealed that a notice with the words “jambatan belum dibuka” (bridge not open yet) was installed in front of a roundabout before the bridge.

However, since yesterday afternoon, many vehicles are queuing up at the bridge waiting for the bridge to ‘open’.

Motorists seemed to ignore the notice.In fact, this reporter was told that the Batang Samarahan Bridge was only open from 4 pm to 7pm yesterday.

An auxiliary policeman said the Samarahan Bridge will be closed today until further notice.

He also advised the public to check with local newspapers on the announcement of the bridge’s opening.

The public could be confused with previous media reports which stated that the Batang Samarahan Bridge will be open in conjunction with the Gawai celebrations on 1 June.

Earlier last month, former Works Minister and Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof who visited the Batang Samarahan Bridge said it will open to the public by early June.

According to him, the 790-metre bridge was built at a cost of RM93 million.
