MIRI: Krill or ‘bubuk’ season is back, providing fishermen and housewives as well people with spare time here the opportunity to earn extra income.

Krill are tiny crustaceans used by the locals to make ‘belacan’ and ‘cencaluk’.

Pak Yusof, a fisherman from Kampung Batu 1 here, said the krill season lasted for three weeks to one month every year.

“Normally Krill season is usually between February and April every year.  Sometimes, krill appear in August but in small volume,” he said.

He said during peak season, he could catch between 200 and 300 kilogrammes a day and sell the crustaceans between RM7 and RM8 per kilogramme.

Krill are caught with special net called ‘paka’ by the locals and the net comes in two types, namely ‘paka sorong’ and ‘paka tunda’.  Paka sorong is a push-type net while the paka tunda is a pull-type net.

A paka can cost about RM300.
