KAPIT : Bukit Goram assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat, has called on the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) to give focus to Kapit’s health care services.

He expressed his optimism and confidence that after a three-day working visit by the Deputy Minister of Health, Dato Seri Dr. Hilmi bin Haji Yahaya and the high powered delegation from both Putrajaya and Sarawak Health Department, remedial measures would be taken soon to address the current limitations and constraints both in terms of manpower and medical equipment at Kapit Hospital.

“I fully support the long list of requests. I hoped after the visit by the Deputy Minister and the high powered delegation from both Putrajaya and Sarawak Health Department, remedial measures would be taken soon to address the current limitations and constraints in both manpower and medical equipments here”, said Jamit at ‘An Evening With Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia’ held at Dewan Sri Baleh, here recently. Jamit said that he followed very closely the services provided by the health care services at Kapit Clinic and Kapit Hospital through constant contact with the hospital staffs and patients.

Requests to build new blocks and quarters or for more manpower and medical equipment are not for luxury but a necessity in a continuous effort to improve health care here. “As the Wakil Rakyat, I surely give my full support to the long list of wishes.

If we want to enhance the quality of services, then, there must be sufficient medical equipment and manpower. There is a growing need in better health care and also the specialist services. Kapit Hospital needs the surgery based specialists like ENT (ear nose and throat), orthopaedics, neurologist, cardiologist, anaesthetic specialist and so forth”, said Jamit.

“I am concerned by the frequent medical referral of patients to Sibu to seek special health care. The long distance transfer of patients is not only painful but also expensive. I was told that in 2016 there were some 864 cases of referral and from January to September 2017 we have already recorded some 545 cases. This is a very big number.

However, if we have the specialist at Kapit Hospital, then we solve a lot of problem. Patients need not be referred elsewhere for advanced medicines”, pointed out Jamit. He hoped that the MOH would add more haemodialysis machines, CD-Scanner and to replace the malfunction X-Ray machine at Kapit Hospital. In response, Dato Seri Hilmi Yahaya explained that his purpose to visit Kapit is to see for himself the actual situation on the ground.

“The reason I bring the high powered delegation from Putrajaya MOH and State Health Department is because we are on a fact finding mission. You have a long list of requests, I will study it case by case and we go by priority.

A lot of Klinik Desa were worn off and depilated. MOH is in the process of upgrading the clinics. In Semenanjung Malaysia it is about RM7 million per clinic but in Sarawak probably it could be more expensive because of transport and logistic”, Hilmi explained.

“We will look into your long list of wishes. Responding to build a new block at Kapit Hospital, we will do, it is a matter of time. One thing, you must provide the land and we bid for funding”, responded Hilmi. Also speaking at the function were the Director Kapit Health Department, Dr Hamidi Mohamad Sharkawi and Director of Kapit Hospital Dr Hii King Ching.
