KUCHING: After four successful runs involving university students, Camp United looked to break through to the youths from all secondary schools in Kuching to prepare them with a better understanding of community building.

Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) and Sarawak Development Institute (SDI), together with The
Champions organised the first of its series, Camp United High School Edition 2018, from Nov 2 to Nov 4 at Kem Putra Sentosa, Sematan.

Camp United is a weekend camp by young people for young people, aimed at fostering unity amongst our youth through an engaging, memorable and holistically challenging camp-experience to create and build inspired, passionate communities of empowered young people. The camp is designed and curated to foster unity through diversity ad hardship, exemplified in the activities and sessions throughout the camp.

The camp programme combined a series of physically, mentally and emotionally challenging tasks with in-depth discussions aimed at developing their civic-mindedness, individual character and an understanding of their part-to-play in our community, laying the foundation for strengthening unity among our young people.

A total of 70 students, aged 15 and 16 years old, from various secondary schools in Kuching participated in Camp United. These schools included SMK St. Joseph Kuching, SMK St. Teresa Kuching, SMK St. Thomas, SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg, SMK Petra Jaya, SM Sains Kuching, and St. Joseph’s Private School.

In the day, participating students from various backgrounds engaged with one another in various challenges designed and built around communal values such as humility, trust, integrity, perseverance, sacrifice and others that seek to build relationships strengthened through this shared experiences.

In the evening, the campers took part in in-depth discussions about various topics or issues related to unity in a communal setting. These sessions were led by the guest speaker, Ivan Evetovics, a motivational speaker and history teacher from Lodge International School. He conducted both interactive and reflective sessions about knowing one’s identity, challenging the students to better know themselves. These sessions acted as a platform for the campers to get closer to their peers throughout the camp.

Lastly, Camp United would not be without its volunteers as well. The volunteers consist of past participants who have taken part in previous camps over the years. This first installment of Camp United High School Edition had the privilege of having volunteers not only from Kuching, but from
Sabah, and other countries such as Uganda, Jamaica and Kenya. The organisers wish to express their sincere gratitude to all who have helped out in making Camp United a success.

Camp United seeks to be an avenue for a growing community of young people to congregate,
connect and to actively contribute to their community to become a united and empowered generation.
