KUCHING: “Qi Gong” is a traditional health treatment which differs from the other traditional health treatments such as “Tai Chi” and “Yoga”. Originally from Taiwan, invented by Chai Liong An, a 59 year-old Taiwanese, Qi Gong was created 30 years ago and has spread to Malaysia.

The numerous success stories of healing diseases caused Liew Tho Hiong, the founder in East Malaysia and Chairman of Infiniti Qi Gong Society, to spread Qi Gong in Sabah and Sarawak as well as Brunei in 2014. Liew, who was a Lymphoma Cancer patient firmly said that after practising Qi Gong, his disease slowly faded away and he became healthier than before.

Due to the results, he decided to form an association to spread the benefits of Qi Gong in East Malaysia. The treatment involved the inhale and exhale method in which oxygen assists the body to fight against diseases especially cancer.

“The best time to practise Qi Gong movements is from 5.30 AM until 7.30 AM. During that period, oxygen will induce the positive mood to your mind and body. However, prior to practising the movements, you have to drink warm water (300ml to 500ml). “During the practise, the practitioners will sweat and all the toxic from the body will be excreted. Practising together and sharing emotions will make a conducive environment as well as induce positive energy. This will lead the mechanism to fight against the disease,” he explained.

According to Liew, there is a total of more than 3,100 registered members throughout East Malaysia including those from Brunei. “The membership is growing annually because the benefits of practising Qi Gong is getting wellknown. In part, the membership is free with no age limits. The registered member will have a customised Infiniti Qi Gong Society T-Shirt” he added.

In Sarawak, there are almost 800 regular members who practise Qi Gong every day. There are six locations for group practise and among them are Friendship Park in Jalan Song with two groups (the North and South area of the park), Garden Park in MBKS (Kuching South City Hall) area, MJC Square in BDC, and Siburan.

“Each group will have a leader to lead the exercise. Sometimes parents will also bring their children to join the exercise especially during school holidays,” he added. He disclosed that a special occasion is held once a week to teach the beginners because the technique is fixed and members must follow the exact technique.

Those with more experience will guide the beginners. “Among the numerous cases of those practising Qi Gong, a member who was not able to drive due to a sickness was now able to drive a car,” said the grandfather of two.
