KUCHING:  Sarawak is one of the popular destinations for China to invest in Malaysia.

China remains an important trading partner and is an emerging source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for Sarawak and Malaysia.

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan  revealed this during a courtesy call on him by the Fujian Provincial Government delegation at Pullman Hotel here yesterday.

The delegation was led by Member of the Standing Committee and Secretary-General of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee, Liang Jianyong.

Tengah added that in 2016, Sarawak’s exports to China totalled RM76.7 billion while its imports totalled RM5.3 billion.

“We exported mainly natural gas, timber and timber products and electrical components while we imported manufactured goods and machinery,” he said.

The purpose of the Fujian delegation’s visit to Sarawak was to strengthen the relationships between governments, businesses and the people from both Sarawak and Fujian following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Jointly Promote the Building of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and Declaration of Friendship Agreement  last year.

“It was here, more than a year ago on July 17, 2016 that both Sarawak and Fujian Province signed the MoU to Jointly Promote the Building of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and later the Declaration of Friendship Agreement on October 25, 2016.

“Since then, there have been increased exchanges between Sarawak and Fujian Province, including business and investment opportunities and social exchanges such as the offer of Fujian Scholarships and others.

“Sarawak is currently embarking on the Digital Economy and the signing of Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) today augurs well for the state’s direction and hope that it will benefit all the parties involved and accelerate the state’s industrialisation agenda,” said Tengah who is also Second Minister of Urban Development and Natural Resources.

He also hoped that both Sarawak and Fujian Province could continue to collaborate in areas such as enhancing the relationships in trade and investment between Sarawak and Fujian Province, exploring further the proposed airline connectivity between Fujian Province and Sarawak and identifying cornerstone companies to collaborate and invest in selected industries in Sarawak such as high-tech electronics energy intensive agriculture, halal and food processing, shipbuilding, biomass and real estate development, apart from Government to Government (G-to-G) bilateral relationships.

At the event yesterday, Tengah also witnessed the MoC signing ceremony between Fujian Pacific Network Technology Co. Ltd. (FPNT) and Pos Malaysia Berhad (Pos Malaysia) to formalise the appointment of Pos Logistics Berhad (PLB) as FPNT’s exclusive and total e-Commerce logistics services provider in the region.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Development and  Assistant Minister of E-Commerce, Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais and Assistant Minister of Coastal Road, Datuk Julaihi Narawi.
