KUCHING: The fund raising committee of St Matthew’s Church, Sungai Maong will hold a walkathon on 15 July.

Money collected from the walkathon themed ‘Small Steps, Big Future’ will go to the church’s building fund.

St Matthew’s is under the Anglican Church of Sarawak and Brunei, which is known as the Diocese of Kuching.

“We hope to raise RM15,000 from the event which will go to the church building fund, for a small part in the advancement of the Kingdom of God,” St Matthew’s Parish priest in charge Revd Louis Then said in a press statement yesterday.

At present the church ministers to the Chinese-speaking congregation in the Sungai Maong Baru-Batu Kawah area, as well as those around Kuching, from a shophouse block.

The 2.5km route for the walkathon will begin from the courtyard of St Thomas’ Cathedral, McDougall Road at 7am. It will cover McDougall Road, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Reservoir and then McDougall Road back to the cathedral.

Organisers estimate walkers will take between 30 minutes and 40 minutes, depending on their paces to cover the route.

Participants will be issued with official sponsorship cards with a minimum of RM50 set for each walker.

The closing date for registration is 1 July.
