Civil servant among 28 nabbed in ‘Ops Pau’

KUALA TERENGGANU: A civil servant was among 28 people arrested in a special operation to eradicate vagrants and extortionists conducted by police teams from the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters (IPD) on Friday.

Kuala Terengganu District Police deputy chief, Supt Suffian Sulaiman said ‘Ops Pau’ was conducted in three locations, namely the Kuala Terengganu District Council Bus Station (MBKT), Kuala Terengganu Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) and around the Grand Puteri Hotel.

According to him, the 43-year-old civil servant was detained with his accomplice and checks also found two small packets believed to contain syabu in the trousers’ pocket. “The civil servant who was married with three children also tested positive for syabu.

“This operation was carried out after receiving information from the state government and monitoring Facebook on extortion activities (pau) by vagrants and drug addicts around the operation area which is frequented by the public.

“Three teams comprising eight officers and 60 personnel were immediately deployed to raid and clean up the area from the elements scaring the people,” he told reporters at IPD Kuala Terengganu on Friday.

According to him, police also arrested a married couple and two friends who had just finished taking drugs in a hut as well as an old man wanted in connection with a bank fraudulent money transaction case. “Anyone with information on extortion activities in public places can come forward and lodge reports at the nearest police station to enable immediate action to be taken,” he said.-Bernama
