KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the state government is reviewing all the existing ordinances and laws involving land matters under the Sarawak’s rights.

“For example, our amendment on our Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958 recently was in line with our objective to ensure that our rights on the land, and also its yield, are preserved.

“This is to ensure that the people’s rights over the land are protected and at the same time complimented the development agenda to drive the state’s economic activities,” Johari said, adding that it was an important matter because only Sarawakians can defend their rights.

He pointed this out in his speech at the Land and Survey Department’s 100th anniversary celebration graced by the Head of the State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Ragad Kurdi Taib at the State Legislative Assembly Building here last Sunday.

Johari also lauded Tun Pehin Sri Taib’s contributions to improve the services of the State Land and Survey Department when he was the chief minister for more than 30 years.

“Changes that he (Tun Pehin Sri Taib) has brought to the Land and Survey Department is a legacy in an effort to improve the administration system and also in providing better services. This showed that Tun’s commitment in improving the services of the state government to the people and at the same time ensuring their relevancy and efficiency.

He also stressed that land in the state must be managed holistically for the future generations of Sarawakians.

Also present were the chief minister’s wife Datin Amar Juma’aini Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and his wife Datuk Dayang Morliah, DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, State Secretary Tan Sri Morshidi Abdul Ghani and other distinguished guests.
