Combined teams emerge XCR champion

KUCHING: A combination of cyclists from team Thailand and Johor National Team broke the dominance of Giant Team to become the Champion for the Cross Country Relay (XCR) category during the Siol International Mountainbike Challenge (SIMBC) 2018.

The combination of champion cyclists recorded 12 minutes 30 seconds to cross the finishing line, while team KAZ emerged as the runner-up with the time of 12 minutes 52 seconds.

Sabah Cycling team, that clocked 12 minutes 59 seconds finished in third place, only 17 seconds faster leaving the previous winner, Team Giant 1, which finished in 13 minutes 16 seconds.

The prizes for the SIMBC 2018 was handed over to the winners by the Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Hamzah, together with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Abang Wahab Abang Julai.

In the Cross Country Olympic Men Elite category, a last minute drama saw Ari Hirabayashi from Specialised Racing Japan burst his tyre in the final lap, but managed to finish ahead of 23 other participants clocking 1 hour, 42 minutes and 5 seconds, while Kirill Kazantsev from City Pavlodar, who did not seize the opportunity to catch up with the race leader, settled for second place in 1 hour 44 minutes and 6 seconds, followed by Keerati Sukprasart from Thailand National Team in third place with his time of 1 hour, 48 minutes and 23 seconds.

For the Cross Country Olympic Women Elite category, Thailand National Team cyclist Warinothorn Phetpraphan clocked 1 hour 24 minutes and 23 seconds to lead and sit on top of the leaders’ board, while teamates Kittika Silapat also from Thailand National Team finished second with 1 hour 28 minutes and 52 seconds while in third place, also from Thailand National Team, Siriluck Warapiang managed to clock 1 hour 34 minutes and 13 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Cross Country Olympic Sarawak Close category saw Choon Liang Tay from Team Giant Kuching finished in first place, followed by Ivan Ong Chung Wee, also from Team Giant Kuching, and Wan Haikal Wan Zainal from City Cycling Club settled for third place.

The Men Master A category saw Mohd Hafiz Rozli from SBS Giant Racing Team prevailed over 11 others with his time of 58 minutes 45 seconds, while H. Vande Lanjim from 88 Bikers Cycling Club trailed behind in second place with 1 hour 1 minute and 20 seconds while Mohd Hairi Abdul Jalil from UTEM Cycling Team finished in third place with 1 hour 5 minutes.

For the Men Master B category, Supian Nor from Corbusiser, took the top spot over other cyclists with 1 hour 2 minutes and 21 seconds, leaving Xan Tan Chung in second place with 1 minute and 4 seconds difference, while Chai Kong Yong Glory finish third with 1 hour 5 minutes 17 seconds.

In the Men Junior category, Mohd Faizikry Jumah from Sabah Cycling Club clocked 1 hour 6 minutes and 8 seconds to finish in the top spot, while Phunsiri Sirimongkhon from Thailand National Team trailed in second place with 1 hour 9 minutes, whereas Denis Sergiyenko from Kazakhstan National Team settled for third place with his time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 28 seconds.

The Women Junior category only saw two participants with Tatyana Bogdanova from Kazakhstan National Team in first place by finishing the race in 1 hour 12 minutes and 7 seconds, while Ainie Markus from Sabah Cycling Club finished in second clocking 1 hour 20 minutes and 53 second.

Organised by DBKU and originally known as the Bukit Siol Moutain Bike Challenge, the SIMBC was the seventh of the nine legs Asia Mountain Bike (AMS) Series, which is held across several Asian countries.
The competition was also aimed at positioning SIMBC as a premier mountain bike event in the country and at the same time to look out for new cycling talents.

More than 200 participants from across Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia and European countries took part in the challenge.
