KUCHING: Ops Manis undertaken by the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) Sarawak had seized a total of RM107,453.80 worth of controlled items.

Among the items seized were sugar worth RM52,677.80;  cooking oil worth RM886;  flour worth RM186, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) gas tank worth RM13,900  and two units of vans worth RM40,000.

The operation was a joint collaboration between MDTCC and the Bukit Aman Royal Police Force’s (PDRM’s) Socio-Economic Investigation Department (E5) was mainly to track down the smuggling of sugar outside the state.

A total of five cases that fall under the Supply Control Act were found out in Lundu and Batu Kitang.

“The operation commenced on 4 April however, espionage activities had been conducted prior to the operation since four months ago.

“We found out that their (wholesalers and suppliers) modus operandi was that they would keep a lot of this controlled items in an amount that would not comply with their licence.

“Many of those who are involved have a licence but they are only allowed to trade up to a certain amount that is enough for them to carry out their business.

“Their offence also included storing control items at different locations as stated in their licence and that their stock book was not updated when they received their supplies.

Chief of Enforcement Division MDTCC Sarawak, Abd Hafidz A Rahim told this to reporters in a press conference held at MDTCC Headquarters, here yesterday.

It was believed that sugar was traded at a much higher price in Indonesia at 12,000 Rp (about RM3.99) per kg as compared to local price which is at RM2.95 per kg.

“Those who are found guilty of the offence will be convicted under Section 22  (1) of the Supply Control Act where corporate organisation could be fined not more than RM2 million for their first offence and not more than RM5 million for their subsequent offence.

“Individual offenders will be charged less than RM1 million for their initial offence or three years jail and not more than RM3 million on their subsequent offence or five years imprisonment, or both.

“These different cases are linked to each other and therefore, each one found guilty will be charged accordingly,” said Hafidz.
