KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will assist 17 unlicensed lodging houses in its area get their operating licences.
DBKU Commissioner, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, revealed this at a press conference held at the library of the Sarawak Islamic Complex here on Thursday.
Wee pointed out after they were registered, the lodging houses would be able to market themselves without fear.
He added that once they were registered and licensed, there would be rules and regulations for them to adhere to.
“The licensing process needs to go through the Land and Survey Department, State Planning Authority and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
“For us, once that is all done, we have no problems in doing our part,” said Wee.
DBKU, he added, also wanted to assist in shortening the time taken for the licensing process which could take up to 2 or 3 years.
“Maybe, some regulations can be relaxed but one thing we should emphasise is the safety of the guests; that should not be ignored.
“Many people think that lodging houses are for the low income segment .
“Lodging houses are part of the tourism facilities. Many people love to live in lodging houses because they are clean and reasonably priced,” said Wee.
