LONG LAMA: Rural town like Long Lama though located deep in the hinterland of Baram surrounded by predominantly Orang Ulus communities like the Kayans, Kenyahs and Penans will always come alive every Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration.
According to a local resident, traditional open houses were held to welcome family members, friends and visitors during festive seasons.
“It is even meaningful when many family members who work and reside away from the town will make every effort to return back for the celebration. The CNY celebration is always unique for Long Lama as the various ethnic communities living in the town will spare their time to visit the Chinese community.

“Through years of living among other ethnics, the Chinese community here has blending well with the Orang Ulu communities as they (the Chinese) can converse well in local dialects especially Kayan and Kenyah.
“Long Lama community live harmoniously all these years, and religious celebrations are always a platform to enhance and foster closer community bindings,” remarked Telang Usan Assemblyman, Dennis Ngau during his CNY visit here recently.
“Of course, today’s celebration and mood is quite different as compare to 20 years ago as the younger generation is working away from the town. The traditional visiting is less happening as some of them choose to celebrate the CNY at their new home, away from Long Lama itself.
“However, we always encourage our community to return home during auspicious occasion to ensure the younger generation knows their roots well,” said Chinese community leader for Long Lama, Beluru and Lapok, Penghulu Desmond Yap Cheng Siang.
Also present at the visit were Telang Usan PBB Youth chief and member of PBB Sarawak Youth Movement, Councilor Dominic Nyurang Ajeng, SAO Edwin Jelenggai as well as PBB Telang Usan Excos, PDP and SUPP members.
