JOHOR BAHRU: The change in the sign-off phrase in official government letters, from “saya yang menurut perintah” (I who obey orders) as used by the previous administration to “saya yang menjalankan amanah” (I who carry out the trust”), is expected to restore the glory and trust of the public to civil servants in the country.

Public Service Department director-general Datuk Borhan Dolah said the move was in line with the government’s aspiration for civil servant to understand that every order, task and responsibility is a trust that should be carried out as best as possible.

“The government is very serious in efforts to establish a service that is fair, transparent, corruption-free and power abuse-free.

“We have to restore the people’s confidence so that the services in the government administration will be more sustainable, like in 1982 with  the slogan ‘Clean, Efficient, Trustworthy,” he said in his address to staff of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Skudai here on Saturday.

Borhan said civil servants were an important element in the governance of a country.

“Our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has always said that public servants are important and they are the backbone of the country’s administration.

“Therefore, being trustworthy is the basic value that every civil servant has to have to ensure that every work or service done is of high quality. I hope, by working together, we can rectify and start afresh to uplift the civil servants,” he added. – Bernama
