KUCHING: Elected representatives, particularly the senior ones, are advised not to be too involved in business, because by doing so will affect their performance in servicing the people, state and country, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Haji Fadillah Yusof.

“I agree with what the Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg said during the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue on Saturday that politicians should not stray away from their main focus.

“It is okay to have a business but you must not be too involved in it especially when your political position can be used as an advantage to gain market opportunity,” he said when met at the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) voucher presentation to 2,000 recipients from the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency at the Customs Academy here, yesterday.

Fadillah, who is Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, also said that State Assemblymen (ADUNs) should show good performance since they had pledged to serve the state and the people.

“If they do no want to be kicked out from the cabinet, then they should perform, because this is the only way they are assessed. However, that decision can only be made by the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister,” he said.

He did not mention any name when asked whether there would be potential candidates from the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth’s wing contesting in the coming general election.

“I trust that some of our youth members will be given the opportunity; this is the practice in PBB,” said Fadillah.

Also present was Tupong State Assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
