KUCHING: The Ministry of Public Utilities will be upgrading the water billing system in the near future.

“It will be similar to the one currently being used by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) termed the smart billing system. This will be convenient to consumers as they would not have to make trips out of their homes to settle their water bills,” said its minister, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom in an interview after launching the new logo for his ministry at PELITA Tower here, yesterday.

Dr Rundi also disclosed that the state’s No Revenue Water (NRW) is very high at 61 per cent compared to the rest of the states in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the ministry will also undertake five pilot projects under the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) and the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) to supply rural and remote areas with clean and consumable water.

“If these pilot projects are successful then we will proceed to the next phase which is to swiftly establish the Sarawak Water Grid,” said Dr Rundi.
