KUCHING: Fires involving home or building in Kota Samarahan Division declined in the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Samarahan Bomba chief, Hashim Ramlan said only 15 fires were recorded in the first four months of this year but last year more than 20 fires were recorded in the same period.

He was speaking to the press after officiating at the Samarahan-level ‘International Firefighters’ Day’ at Kota Samarahan near here yesterday which was attended by 50 firefighters.

Hashim also urged longhouse residents to be careful and not be complacent with their surroundings especially with the upcoming Gawai celebration.

“Lately, we received reports of fires involving longhouses in other divisions. The fires were due to the negligence of the longhouse residents themselves,” he explained.

Hence, he stressed that for the upcoming Gawai celebration, the people should be wary of fire in the kitchen or faulty electrical wiring.

“We are very grateful to the people in Samarahan because they are increasingly concerned about fire safety. In fact, we always give instructions to our officials to conduct awareness talks, inspect buildings and others in an effort to prevent fire from occurring,” he said.
