Early CNY cheer for 400 needy senior citizens

KUCHING: Four hundred needy senior citizens received “angpows” and mini hampers from Sports Toto at Che Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society here yesterday.

The event was graced by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk James Chan Khay Syn who gladly handed out angpows and mini hampers to the beneficiaries.

Kuching is one of the 50 locations in the country selected for the Sports Toto Chinese New Year Ang Pow Donation Campaign this year.

The number forecast operator will share the festive joy by giving away angpows and mini hampers to over 18,000 needy senior citizens nationwide.

“The Sports Toto charity is a good example of how companies can help and support the less fortunate in our community.

“The enthusiastic participation of so many staff in Sports Toto in these events strengthens the sense of community and demonstrates that Kuchingnites do care for one another and are generous in their contributions to a good cause.

“I would like to wish all those who celebrate this beautiful festival a very Happy Chinese New Year”, said Chan in his address.

“In order to foster the spirit of caring and sharing in our society, more successful companies should give financial support. In fact, some charities in the world are actually supported by foundations or trusts that run businesses,” he said.

The donation campaign takes place from Jan 17 to Jan 21 in 50 cities and towns nationwide to benefit needy senior citizens aged 60 years and above.

Through the campaign, Sports Toto aims to achieve the objective of instilling positive values such as respecting and caring for the elders.

To date, Sports Toto has contributed over RM21 million benefitting more than 391,000 senior citizens nationwide since the inception of the donation campaign in 1988.

Sports Toto is glad to note that this is indeed a worthy cause that the company wishes to continue driving in many years to come.

The campaign is Sports Toto’s major Helping Hands programme which carries out various corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects throughout the year.

Other than festive donations, Sports Toto also contributes substantial amounts annually to the National Sports Council and sporting events organised by local sports associations in developing sporting talents.
