SIBU: Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd released water from the Bakun Dam on 27 February after the water level in the dam rose to 228.72 metres above sea level.

In a statement here on Friday, Sarawak Hidro said the excess water were released through the channel spillway following release of water on 20 February when the water level increased from 228 to 228.42metres above sea level.

“This has occurred because of heavy rain in the catchment area of the Bakun catchment area and records shows that the level of incoming water to Balui reservoir increased to 5,100 cubic meters per second,” it’s said.

Sarawak Hidro said it had maintained the level and volume of water being released, partly from the water inlet, without increasing the water volume.

Meanwhile, according to a press statement by the Drainage and Irrigation Department, the king tide phenomenon and continuous rainfall had also contributed to the floods in Sibu.
