KUCHING: The Sarawak Football Association (FAS) will work together with the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) from early January next year to unearth young talents throughout Sarawak.

“For the first time, FAS will introduce the football development programme consistently throughout Sarawak with FAS being represented by affiliates in their respective areas in collaboration with NFDP,” said Sarawak Football Development Program Unit chairman, Abang Suhordie Abang Zaini.

“FAS will adapt the programme introduced by NFDP in addition to its own programmes from time to time,” added Suhordie, who is also the FAS vice-president, when officiating the 10, 11 and 12 years old Football Carnival jointly organised between FAS and NFDP at the State Stadium, recently. Previously, football development programmes were hosted only through competitions.

And many of these young talents are not guided to go further to pursue their dreams.

Over 150 participants aged 10 to 12 were present at the carnival beginning 8am. In January next year, the FAS and NFDP will be going to each division to meet the divisional football associations to launch the programme, Suhordie said. Meanwhile, according to head of NFDP youth coach, Azry Abdullah, more FAS-NFDP centres will be set up in secondary and primary schools in every part of Sarawak by selecting one of the schools with appropriate facilities and students from around the area will be trained to join the programme at the selected centre.

The NFDP programme was introduced by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia in April 2014 to boost local football by attracting more quality players at the grassroots level.

The NFDP covers a broad scope – education of coaches, talent scouts, facilities, infrastructure, quality competitions and quantities at various levels – as it seeks to provide young people for the high demand of professional football players. Since its introduction seven years ago in Sarawak, NFDP now has nine centres located in Kuching, Samarahan, Bintulu and Belaga.

“The NFDP welcomes the collaboration and is ready to share experiences, knowledge and football development programmes with FAS and this is a positive effort to produce Sarawak’s talents to represent the State in particular and in general,” added Azry “Hopefully, with the efforts of the FAS, we will not only be able to complete these talents for a short period of time. Even these talents can go further,” Azry said. Also present at the event were FAS vice president and secretarygeneral, Razali Dolhan, Cassidy Morris.
