MIRI: Customers patronising e-Mart Supermarket at Tudan here ran hither and thither for their lives when a fast food restaurant inside the supermarket caught fire last Saturday afternoon.
The fire, which happened at about 5pm, was the second to strike the supermarket this year; a fire in early April destroyed five shops there.
The fire last Saturday was believed to have started from the kitchen of the fast food restaurant. The restaurant workers later called the firemen.
While waiting for the firemen to arrive, several staff of the supermarket tried to put out the fire using fire extinguishers.
Chief of the Miri Fire and Rescue Department, Law Poh Kiong said ten firemen in two fire engines rushed to the scene of the fire after receiving a phone call from a member of the public at about 4.51pm.
He said the firemen took about 30 minutes to control the fire. The blaze was put out totally at 7.15pm.
“The fire destroyed 60 per cent of the fast food restaurant but the shops next door were untouched,” Law added in a press statement.
No lives were lost and the cause of the fire and cost of damages are being investigated.
