KOTA SAMARAHAN: The first floating mosque in Kuching City, Masjid Kuching, is expected to be completed in March next year.

Chairman of Sarawak Islamic Council, Datu Misnu Haji Taha told the media this yesterday during his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Taman Desa Ilmu here.

“About 80 per cent of the work has been completed and the mosque is expected to be occupied in June next year. It will become a tourist attraction as it is located near the Kuching Waterfront and people also can perform their prayers there,” said Misnu.

The floating mosque, which costs around RM15 million, can accommodate 2,500 people.

Meanwhile, Misnu also revealed that the Sarawak Islamic Council committee planned to place stars in three sectors of all mosques in the state, namely, toilet areas, outside area and inside area to indicate their level of cleanliness. The highest grade is five stars.

“The grading system will BE implemented in August this year,” he disclosed.

Misnu also invited 40 orphans from Sarawak Orphan Children Welfare Oganisation (Peryatim) to his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house.
