KOTA SAMARAHAN: The first Iban and first Dayak to be a three-star general in the Malaysian Army yesterday finally called it a day after nearly 42 years of service.

Eastern Field Commander,  Lieutenant-General Datuk Stephen Mundaw, who was born on May 31, 1958 in Kuching, officially handed over his duty to Lieutenant General Datuk Wira Zamrose Mohd. Zain as the Third Eastern Field Commander yesterday.

The handing over of duty ceremony together with the signing of Handing Over Duty Note and handing over of the baton command took place at the Parade Ground of Muara Tuang Camp near here.

Meanwhile, Army Commander, General Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmad Hasbullah Mohd. Nawawi in his speech during the handing over of duty ceremony said that retirement is a common thing happening to public servants.

He said that for 41 years, four months and 23 days Mundaw’s service is a very long and colourful one.
“A variety of events like fighting with the communists had given him a service full of experiences as well as holding several key leadership posts.

“Hence, to repay his services,  Eastern Field administration staff in particular, must serve with excellence in order to continue his legacy,” said Hasbullah who also witnessed the hading over ceremony.

When met by reporters, Mundaw told that his message to officers was for them to serve with full commitment, dedication and integrity.

“Whatever things that you need to do, you need to focus and make it as best as you can and carry it out with full responsibility.

“That is the principle of being held throughout my service that can be used as a guide for the young people,” he pointed out.
