Five cheat death in two-car crash

SARIKEI: Five people cheated death after the cars they were travelling in collided head-on at Bukit Kayu Malam, Sebangkoi here at around 5.00pm on Saturday.

Sarikei District Police chief, Superintendent Mat Jusoh Mohamad said the accident occurred when the driver of a Proton Saga car was heading to Betong from Sarikei while the driver of the Perodua Viva car was heading to Sarikei from Betong.

“Upon arriving at KM 422, the driver of the Perodua Viva was believed to have lost control of the vehicle and veered into the opposite before colliding head-on with the Proton Saga.

“Both drivers and their passengers were taken to Sarikei Hospital for treatment. Their injuries have yet to be determined,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarikei Fire chief, Suna Kaha said one of the victims sustained leg injuries after he was pinned to his seat.

“A 39-year-old man who was pinned to the driver’s seat was extricated by firefighters. Three other passengers who were in the same vehicle were sent to the hospital by members of the public,” he said.

Suna said the driver of the Perodua Viva was extricated by members of the public before handing him over to the paramedics for treatment.
