“With the construction of the bridge, it will shortened the travelling time without going through the ever crowded Serian town, from Selabi Mantung Road to Serian Tebedu/Mongkos Road and vice versa.”

KUCHING: Bukit Semuja state assemblyman John Ilus has urged the relevant ministries and agencies to solve potential flood threats in his constituency.

He explained that villagers from Tebakang, Sorak, Selabi, Serian Hulu, Serian Hilir, Munggu Limo and several other areas along Batang Sadong have expressed their concerns on their villages during the continuous rainfall.

“I hope the relevant authorities will look into this problem and I have written to the ministry on matters related to river maintenance such as clearing, deepening and diversions where necessary.

“Until now, I haven’t received any feedback on the matter,” he said in his debate speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here yesterday.

He added that the wooden bridge at Sungai Seroban in Tarat  constituency also needed immediate attention.

“The bridge is one of the three bridges along the main road to two other villages, namely Kpg Ampungan and Kpg Sebangkoi,” said John.

He also proposed to build a concrete bridge across Sg Sadong located near Kpg Sorak Melayu.

“With the construction of the bridge, it will shorten the travelling time without going through the ever-crowded Serian town, from Selabi Mantung Road to Serian Tebedu/Mongkos Road and vice-versa,” he said.

“At the same time, it will also open up new areas within and around Sorak and Selabi area and to connect to the present Kpg Sorak Melayu Road.

“It may also be very useful during landas season since these areas are among the few that are prone to flood,” he said.

Meanwhile, Murum state assemblyman Chukpai Ugon said that there were many villages and longhouses in the constituency which have yet to have proper road connectivity.

Among the areas are Tubau, Ulu Jelalong, Ulu Sujan, Urun, Koyan, Murum and Ulu Sungai Linau which can only be reached using former logging road.
