“Therefore, it is imperative for food outlets to maintain a high level of cleanliness and hygiene.

“The council had received complaints that some licensees had neglected their obligations under the license conditions.”

“Some of the common complaints received are: not providing hot water for sterilizing eating utensils; washing cooking utensils at the back lane or on the roads; excessive display of tables and chairs; dirty toilets; unhygienic handling of food and allowing dogs in the premises,” he said.

On civic consciousness and littering, Tiong said although Sibu has undergone vast development and the community’s level of education has increased many folds, it is dishearting to note that many among are still littering consciously at public places.

He said the council had received irresponsible remarks such as ‘it is all right to litter because we have paid assessment rates to the council to engage sweepers to clean the town’.

“Thus, I wish to appeal to everyone in Sibu to observe the highest standard of civic consciousness.

“The littering problem can never be solved if residents are not willing to co-operate,” he said, adding all must work together to keep the town clean and tidy.
