Hazmat rushed to private hospital after mercury spill

KUCHING: A team from the Fire and Rescue Department Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) was rushed to a private hospital here to clean up liquid mercury spilt in a haemodialysis room yesterday morning.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the incident was believed to have occurred when a sphygmomano meter, an instrument used for measuring blood pressure, which contained mercury leaked out.

A total of 10 firemen including two Hazmat personnel from Tabuan Jaya fire station were rushed to the scene to clean up the mercury.

It is understood that the incident which occurred at around 10.40am did not cause any untoward incident, and the situation was under control.
