Heavy vehicles prohibited on road before, after CNY

KUCHING: All vehicles categorised as heavy vehicles are prohibited on the road before and after this Chinese New Year.

Director of Sarawak Road Transport Department, Mohd Shafiq Anas Abdullah revealed that it was to reduce congestion and to ease the road users during this festive season.

“The dates set are on February 14 and 15 which is two days before the Chinese New Year celebration as well as on 24 and 25 February,” he said.

There are four categories of heavy vehicles prohibited on the road during the dates enforced.

The first category comprises low loader lorry, timber lorry, cement mixer lorry, tipper lorry and general cargo lorry which carry construction materials such as cement, iron, steel, stone, sand and soil.

Heavily loaded car carrier truck over 5,000 kilogrammes and lorries carrying minerals such as tin and coal are also in the first category.

All these vehicles are subjected to full restriction or are not allowed to operate during the dates enforced.

Mohd Shafiq added that containers or cargo trucks carrying electronics and electrical items which were allowed to operate from 6 am to 12 midnight.

As for the third category, mobile crane vehicles are only allowed to operate from 6am to 6pm.

The fourth category involves non-restricted vehicle operations which are gas and chemical lorries for medical supplies and the chemical industry including container lorries that carry goods from the port of airport to industrial areas or vice-versa.

Mohd Shafiq also disclosed that cargo lorries carrying daily necessities, lorries transporting waste materials, transport tankers such as petroleum, diesel, gas and LPG were not restricted.

Lorries and heavy machinery which are involved in emergency and rescue as well as postal services were also not prohibited.

Summons will be issued starting today (February 14) and during the prohibition period.
