KUCHING: Cheques worth a total of RM560,000 for five projects were handed over yesterday to three constituencies under an aid programme for houses of worship this year.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the projects were among 231 approved under a RM20-million government allocation.

“These are the last cheques under the programme. For next year, the State government has approved RM30 million,” he said during the cheque presentation ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here.

“This allocation will speed up the construction and repairs of houses of worship. We will closely monitor the construction projects to make sure the objectives are met successfully.”

He said last year, the State government also approved RM15 million for 77 projects throughout Sarawak.

“Today we gave RM100,000 to Nangka Assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee for the construction of a Hindu Temple in Sibu, RM160,000 to Mulu Assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala for a new church and playschool for BEM Kpg Malinau, Mulu National Park, and also the repair and upgrading of BEM Church Kpg Long Selaan, Ulu Baram.

“We also presented RM300,000 to Tanjung Datu Assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu for the repair and upgrading project of St Stephen’s Church at Kpg Rayu Iban, Lundu and for the reconstruction and repair of Methodist Lundu Evangelical Centre Building,” he said.
