Hui Lau Shan is not your simple, average blended mango juice.

According to their South East Asia General Manager, Pan Vui Shang, Hui Lau Shan is a mango dessert that is nothing complicated yet not easy to prepare.

With over 50 and more years being in the dessert market, each Hui Lau Shan outlet around the world is designed so that patrons can take a peek into their fruit bar and watch the people behind the scenes creating the dessert that is loved through generations.

Going back to the 50s, with their customers’ health as priority, Hui Lau Shan started as a humble business in Yuen Long, Hong Kong having guillinggao as their specialty dessert while also serving various other herbal drinks based on a unique recipe passed down from the older generations.

It was then, they crafted a deep impression in people’s mind of the established brand’s reputation as the leader in high quality herbal drinks.

In 1992, Hui Lau Shan went against the odds to become an exclusive brand in the market – through deep research, mango base recipes were produced. Immediately after the successful introduction, Hui Lau Shan jumped the ladder, becoming the pioneer of mango desserts.

‘Sago Duet’ – The mix that started it all.

The mango dessert that changed the direction of Hui Lau Shan was the uniquely mixed ‘Mango Sago’, which is a mixture of mango and sago; the signature yellow dessert that became a legend in Hong Kong food history.

Spreading chains globally, with Shenzen, China being the first, the dessert chain has now 260 outlets worldwide, with the latest outlet opening in Kuching, located at Viva City Shopping Mall being Malaysia’s 20th outlet, and East Malaysia’s first outlet.

Pan described the Malaysian market being “overwhelmingly positive” since their first opening five years ago. As Malaysians have a neverending love for mangoes and durians, Hui Lau Shan was well received here. “Malaysian favourites include the mochi and anything to do with mango-based desserts”, Pan added.

As the General Manager, Pan vouched that their mangoes and durians are carefully curated each day to ensure the quality of each desserts. “Our mangoes flew in from Thailand and Phillipines while our durians are from the Malaysian grounds”, he disclosed saying that they only obtain quality D24 durians.

With mangoes being their primary ingredient in most Hui Lau Shan stores, they uphold a strict standard in selecting their fruits.

“Although mangoes grow in different parts of the world, through experience we found that the taste of mangoes especially from the Phillipines and Thailand provides the most suitable and satisfying taste when fused into our recipes”, Pan shared.

As for the king of fruits, durian-based menu is only available in Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Macau among the 260 outlets worldwide.

In China, the Malaysian durian is known to be a premium fruit product and with Hui Lau Shan combining its recipes with the king of fruits, it became an award-winning product, and one of Hui Lau Shan’s signature product.

Hui Lau Shan serves an array of desserts and beverages such as the ever-popular mango mochi; durian mochi; mango pancake; durian pancake; mango pop pop; mango crystal delight; mango coconut ribbon, and even the mango romance which comprises of three different types of mango servings, to famous Hong Kong street food; signature curry combo and fishball, and many more.

The grand opening of their first East Malaysia store saw Hui Lau Shan sharing famous favourites on May 20 at their latest outlet in Viva City shopping mall.

Among the favourites shared was their Signature Fishball – although it was served with curry, which is one of Malaysian staple food, however, the curry fused together with the fishballs were of different taste – subtle spiciness and neutralises between salty and sweet, allowing us to get familiar with the food culture of Hong Kong.

Also introduced were Mango Pudding, Mango Pop Pop and Sago duet with each combination gave out different flavours to the taste buds – sour, sweet and neutral respectively; the flavours of three desserts is well distinguished, customers can easily choose according to their taste buds.

Two pancakes served during their grand opening, mango and durian showed the most appreciation on that day.

Both pancakes incorporated with their fillings well, letting out strong fruit scent from the two base ingredients. Mango and durian lovers would enjoy this dessert as the originality of each taste is very disctinct.

Not to forget their mochi which is known as the most popular dessert of Hui Lau Shan in Malaysia, just like their counterpart, pancakes, the soft skin of the mochi, when bitten on, melts in your mouth together with the two fruits fused in.

In 2013, Hui Lau Shan Malaysia receives the JAKIM HALAL certificate, steadfastly acknowledged as the first Hong Kong dessert brand to receive the HALAL certificate.

For consecutive years, Hui Lau Shan won the “King of dessert” award in Hong Kong, winning them the reputation of Mango Expert.
