MUKAH: Hundreds of peoples from all walks of life thronged Kampung Penakub Ulu here to witness yesterday’s Kaul Festival. The village-level event was organised by the Village Development and Security Committee of the village, located about 10 minutes away from Mukah Town Centre.

The colour ful programme, which featured all kinds of social, sports and economic activities was launched by Balingian State Assemblyman, Abdul Yakub Haji Arbi. According to him, the side activities helped to promote the Melanau’s most popular festival to the world.

“Several changes which were made to the festival in the last decade or so were purely meant to promote this priceless traditional festival internationally,” he explained. He added that nowadays, Kaul was considered as a symbol of the richness of the local culture. “Besides being a tourist attraction, Kaul is also a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products to the world,” said Yakub.

The event was also attended by Mukah Resident, Awang Johari Awang Mustapha, Temenggong Haji Hendi Suhai, Mukah Parliament Sarawak Special Affairs Department (JASA) Officer in Mukah, Hafizzul Abdul Halim, Pemanca Haji Jali Kawi, KK Sahrin, Cr. Akim, heads of departments and local community leaders.
