India Street Chap Goh Meh Fest on Saturday

KUCHING:  Kuchingites are invited to join the Chap Goh Meh 2018 Celebration, to be held at India Street Pedestrian Mall here this coming Saturday.

Themed ‘Celebration of Prosperity and Diversity’, this year’s Chap Goh Meh Festival will start at 8pm.

“This is the second consecutive year Kuching City North Commission DBKU is organising the event,” Mayor Datuk Abang Wahap Bin Abang Julai told a press conference held at the Waterfront Hotel here yesterday.

“Last year it was held at the Esplanade and the guest-of-honour was TYT. This year the location will be moved to the India Street Pedestrian Mall while the guest-of-honour will be the Chief Minister,” said Abang Wahap.

The Mayor invited all Kuchingites to come and join in the celebration.

“We will be creating a ‘stream’ at Indian Street Padestrian Mall. How it is going to look like, come and see it yourself,” he quipped.

The celebration will include performances and activities like Lions Dance, Dragon Dance, 24 Season Drums, Chinese classical music, multicultural performances, firecrackers and fireworks, Mandarin oranges throwing ceremony, lantern display and Indian dance.

The Mayor said the festival is organised in collaboration with The Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions, Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations, Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kuching, Persekutuan Kebajikan Perniagaan India Muslim, Kuching Old Market Community Association, The Waterfront Hotel and Plaza Merdeka Management Sdn Bhd.

In expectation of a large crowd, the Mayor advised all road users to follow directions from traffic police and DBKU traffic wardens who will be on duty to direct traffic flows.

Also present at the press conference were Dato Wee Hong Seng, DBKU member and organising chairman of Chap Goh Meh Festival 2018.
