KUCHING: Kuching police chief ACP Ng Ah Lek has warned members of the public against misusing the social media by issuing threatening or irresponsible statements.

Ng said social media abuse in that manner was considered a criminal act covered by Section 507 of the Penal Code and Section 233(1) of the Multimedia Communication Act 1988.

Under these sections it is an offence to slander another person through social media, Ng said in a statement yesterday.

On Thursday, Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei lodged a police report claiming he and his family were threatened by an “Adam Yap”, believed to be a fake account holder.

Wong said since August and December last year, a group of people had been slandering him through social media.

On Wednesday, a man was brought to court for slandering him and on Thursday Wong saw the threatening message posted on his FB account.

Wong had alleged that police were dragging their feet.

Ng when contacted said Wong should give the police reasonable time to investigate, identify and trace the culprits concerned.

In another unrelated case, the police chief asked victims of crimes to lodge police report as soon as possible so that the police can carry out investigation efficiently.

He confirmed that a 75-year-old woman was robbed by two men armed with dangerous weapon on Sunday in Petra Jaya.

The victim was not injured but a number of items were stolen from her house.

Ng said the case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping.
