KUALA LUMPUR: The headquarters of Bernama, the Malaysian National News Agency, is now officially at Jalan Bernama. Kuala Lumpur City Hall yesterday installed the signages ‘Jalan Bernama’ for Jalan 1/65A leading from Jalan Tun Razak to Wisma Bernama and ‘Lorong Bernama’ for Jalan 2/65A adjacent to the building.

The replacement of the signages by City Hall contractors at 12.30 pm was witnessed by Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, chief executive officer Datuk Zulkefli Salleh, editor-in-chief Datuk Zakaria Abdul Wahab and several other Bernama executives.

Former Federal Territories Mini s ter Datuk Ser i Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had approved a request by Azman to have Jalan 1/65A renamed Jalan Bernama and Jalan 2/65A as Lorong Bernama.

Wisma Bernama is the first high-rise building along Jalan 1/65A and the news agency has been operating from the premises since 1984. Azman yesterday hailed Jalan Bernama and Lorong Bernama as a ‘priceless recognition’ for Bernama in nat ion-bui lding befitting its role as the country’s official news agency.

“We (Bernamaians) are all very excited with the new signages, especially myself when I first saw the new poster for our road and lane signages.

“We cannot thank them (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) enough for agreeing to and putting up the signages,” said Azman at the launch of the Jalan Bernama and Lorong Bernama signages at Wisma Bernama. Azman also said that the new signages were placed at the right time, a day after Bernama celebrated its 51st anniversary.

Bernama was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1967 and began operating as a news agency on May 20, 1968. He said the new signages come in line with the recognition of a ‘New Malaysia’ now helmed by the newly-formed Pakatan Harapan government.

Asked what the new signages meant for the future generations of Bernama, Azman said the agency’s young journalists must be fully committed to maintaining the quality of Bernama as a news agency which has been the source of information not only for Malaysians but also the international community. “It is particularly important to uphold journalism ethics, especially in this era when everyone is talking about ‘fake news’,” he said. – Bernama
