KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat yesterday inspected the progress of the riverbank and slope protection project at the waterfront along Jalan Kubu Lama here.
The project involves the extension, beautification and landscaping of the existing Kapit Express Terminal up to Fort Sylvia.
“After the project has been completed, there will be a proper place for people to watch water sports in the river,” Jamit said.
“Previously they had to bear the hot sun or rain as there was no proper place to stand, sit or take shelter.”
By water sports, he was mainly referring to the annual Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari and powerboat competitions. The raft safari is held on the first weekend of April each year while the powerboat races are usually held to commemorate Malaysia Day in September.
The waterfront project started on March 25 last year and is scheduled for completion on August 24 this year.
During his inspection Jamit was accompanied by Councillor Liew Hui Hua, Councillor George Tang, SUPP Kapit chairman James Ling Thian Ing, Pemanca Yong Thu Fook and Penghulu Sia Shui Poh.
Jamit had also inspected the proposed Kapit Hospital exit road at Jalan Memora, the upgrading and repairing of Kapit Sports Complex at Jalan Padang Sukan, and the town’s proposed multi-storey car park.
He also visited four families of twenty-eight people who were made homeless when a midnight fire razed their houses at Melatai, Jalan Selirik.
At Rumah Ringgit in Nanga Sebilat, Sungai Kapit in the outskirts of this town, he attended a traditional wedding reception.
“I am happy that the projects have started. I hope the contractors would do their work properly in accordance with the specifications. My concern is whether or not they can complete their work on time,” he said.
Jamit also disclosed that another proposed project involves increasing the volume of the town’s supply of treated water and replacing the aging main pipe to minimize leakage.
Kapit often faces water shortage because demand exceeds supply. The existing Water Treatment Plant maximum capacity is 18 million litres per day (MLD).
“In addition we have the proposed Menuan Road on the other side of the town that will link 12 longhouses from Nanga Menuan to Ulu Menuan.
“Jalan Melipis will also be improved and upgraded from gravel to tar-sealed surface.”
