Joint operation nets big haul on illegal logging

KAPIT: Acting on public complaint and based on information gathered, Sarawak Forestry Corporation Sdn Bhd (SFCSB) Sibu and Bintulu Regional Offices, with assistance from the State Security and Enforcement Unit and Marine Police, conducted a joint operation to eradicate illegal logging activities in the Balleh area.

The 4-day operation, from Aug 7 to Aug 10, yielded substantial detection and subsequent detention of logs and machinery at various localities.

Taken into custody were 794 illegal logs, two excavators, four tractors and two lorries. The logs are believed to have been illegally extracted from nearby licensed timber areas.

None of the logs bore any official marking and during the raids, no individuals were encountered within the vicinity of the areas. All the cases were reported to the police and handed over to the Forest Department for further investigation.
