JPNIN Sarawak monitoring racial ties in the state

KUCHING: The Department of National Unity and Intergration (JPNIN) Sarawak is using a research instrument through  reporting systems and analyzing  specific reporting data on racial relations in the State

The instruments are called Societal Relations  Index (IPM) and Societal Stress Index (IKM).

The Department is using IPM as one of the approaches to show the nation’s state of harmony.

As a whole, based on the IKM, the aspiration to build a Malaysian race can be  defined as a civil society and has IKM below 15 cases per a million population.

The national state of affairs indicate Malaysia can be define at the level of civil society i.e IKM<15 cases per million population.

Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah at press conference during her working  visit to the Department of National Unity and Intergration Sarawak at Simpang Tiga yesterday said, “The Index shows that we are at the level of a civil society and it is getting better this year after election”.

According to Fatimah, the IPM and IKM under the jurisdiction of JPNIN is very important.

“I view this as very important. They (JPNIN) are doing a good job,”  she said, adding that if we want achieve community well-being there must be the factors of “Feel Good” and “Feel Safe”.

“And with that we have to be alert of what are the feeling of the people or the community,” she explained.

Fatimah said there are a lot of programmes being implemented by JPNIN throughout the year that can lead to unity.

“And I feel this is where we can work together,” she said, adding that activities that lead to unity among races and national intergration is very important especially in the context of Sarawak where there are people of races and religions.

In Sarawak not only we have Sarawakians but also Sabahans and West Malaysians also and we have to live in harmony with each other “ she pointed out.

Fatimah said she was also impressed with the activities carried out by Rukun Tetangga where in the State  now there are a total of 958 Rukun Tetangga.

According to JPNIN Sarawak director Dirwana bin Azool,  the Societal Stress Index was based on issues that were reported in the state.

The society Relations Index are based on participation of the community in government programmes whether they supported or not.

He said the reports were sent to National Security Council.

Asked on Sarawak in comparation with the other states, he said, “The graph on the index is not too high and not to low.”
