KUCHING: Defending champion, Lee Ka Tung from Sibu Golf Club (SGC) is going all out to defend his title at the 4th Sarawak Grand Golf Championship 2017 scheduled at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) from October 13 to 15.

The 47-year-old single handicapper had won the event back-to-back since it was introduced by Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) in 2014. This year’s event had attracted golfers from neighbouring Sabah and Brunei while top golfers from Sibu, Miri and Bintulu are also competing.

“It will be challenging for me because there are so many other contenders who are also vying for the champion’s trophy and there are many upcoming junior golfers joining in the fray,” said Lee who came down to Kuching early in order to prepare for the three-day event. According to him, the event at DGCC will be the second for him this year after winning the Sarawak’s leg of the recent Astro Masters Golf Championship 2017 held there in late September.

“I have always been impressed with the pleasant scenery and calm surrounding here (DGCC) but it is still a challenge to take on the greens even though the fairways are reasonable manageable,” said the Sibubased golf ace who almost won all the major local events except for the recent Sarawak Amateur Masters Golf Championship 2017.

He was aware that the other contenders such as fellow Sibu golfers Lau Chin Leong, Wong Tung Ann, Steven Hii Tai Leong and Bennet Ling Soon Kiong are also gunning to become party spoilers alongside with Aziel Teo Ken Yi, Mohd Lokman Mustaffa and Daniel Yeo Thian Chai from Sarawak Golf Club (KGS). Joining in the fray will be top golfers from Sabah who include James Wong Chun Hiong, Tan Lim, Tony Jong Shun Leong, Rueben James, Lim Lam Seng, Chong Choo Fook and Harry Chung Chun Fui.

Meanwhile, the defending champion in the ladies category Angel Hii is also expected to face stiff challenge from 11-year-old Mirabel Ting from Miri Golf Club (KGM) who won the recent 29th Sarawak Amateur Ladies’ Open Golf Championship 2017 held on early May at Sibu Golf Club. Ting who will be competing in an international junior golf event in the United States next year had also won the ladies section of the 29th Sarawak Classic Golf Championship 2017 held at KGS and this year’s 18th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship held from 30 June to 2nd July.

Another contender for the ladies section is Zulaikhah Nurziana Nasseer from KGS who is former Sarawak Sukma golfer and was third in this year’s 18th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship.

A total of 10 ladies golfers are competing in the 4th Sarawak Grand Golf Championship 2017 which is being held for the first time at DGCC. DGCC general manager, Roslan Mohd Salleh expressed optimism for the event to be run smoothly after the successful staging of the last week’s international PGM-MNRB Golf Championship 2017 organised by Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM) which attracted entries from overseas including the United States, South Africa, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and top golfers competing in the ongoing Asian Development Tour (ADT).
