the state constituencies of Ngemah and Machan, with a population of around 30,000 and over 200 longhouses.

Ngemah (N.49) is represented by Alexander Vincent (BN-PRS) while Machan (N.50), by Allen Siden Gramong (BN-PBB). The opening of the 350 metre Kanowit Bridge on May 27 this year has brought many positive changes to Kanowit. The local people, particularly those residing in the Majau, Poi and Ngemah areas can now travel to town with ease. The bridge serves as a gateway to Song and Kapit, and is one of the important components of the 101km Kanowit/Song/Kapit road project.

Work on the RM52 million project began in December 2014 and was fully completed in July this year. Besides the Kanowit Bridge, the project involved building another 40m bridge across Sungai Bungkang as well as constructing a 2.2km road network linking the two riverbanks. With the opening of the bridge before Gawai Dayak, longhouse residents in Majau, Poi, Dap, Ngemah and even Song are able to drive all the way to their longhouses.

This means that almost 90 per cent of areas in Kanowit will soon be connected via road access. More ov e r, the pe opl e of Kanowit, Machan and the surrounding areas have benefit from the Machan Water Treatment Plant.

The project involved the laying and connecting a 75km long pipeline along Jalan Julau-Durin, Jalan Durin-Kanowit and Jalan Machan. Treated water from the new water treatment plant has a capacity of four million litres per day (4 MLD) and distributed by two reservoirs – Reservoir A (2.5 MLD) at the junction of Jalan Bukong- Jagoi and Reservoir B (1.5 MLD) at Jalan Machan. The project was funded by the federal government under the Ministry of Regional and Rural Development. Undertaken by JKR Sarawak, it was completed on May 31, 2013. It has benefited some 5,600 people from 54 longhouses in Machan, along Jalan Julau-Durin and Jalan Durin-Kanowit.
