Kapit BOMBA celebrates International Firefighters’ Day

KAPIT: BOMBA officer of Zone 4 Sarawak Central (Sibu, Kapit, Sarikei and Mukah Divisions) Mutton Gelanggang officiated at the International Firefighters’ Day at Kapit BOMBA headquarters at Jalan Bletih here, yesterday morning.

Mutton in his address said the Internationa Firefighters’ Day was celebrated universally on 4 May since 1999.

He added that it was a day dedicated to ‘International Firefighters’ to recognise, appreciate and honour the role of firefighters to prevent fire and to save life and property.

He added that Volunteer firefighter, JJ Edmonson has on 4 January, 1999 sent e-mail to the whole world to propose a day dedicated to the great sacrifice and commitment of firefighters which led to 4 May to be dedicated to the ‘International Firefighters Day’.

Mutton also stressed on the five important aspects of firefighters in their task. Firstly, to adopt up to date training and discipline to further enhance their profession. Secondly, to ensure all firemen and firefighting equipment are in tip top condition to ensure speedy and effectiveness in any mishap. Thirdly, to constantly reveal and update procedures in emergency situation for optimum result. Fourthly, to enhance the welfare of the firefighters and their family and finally to adopt a high spirit of nationalism and patriotism to the nation and love for the profession.

Meanwhile, various activities were held in conjunction with the celebration including a parade, presentation of certificates to four firefighters namely Sengiang Usat, PeritaJepai, Andrew Paing, Abu Osman and Norman Teo.

The Kapit BOMBA also presented certificate of appreciation to the Kapit Police, Kapit Hospital, RELA and Sarawak Rivers’ Board and Sijil Pendaftaran Kelab 3K (kindergarten) and held a cake-cutting ceremony.

Kapit BOMBA has 30 firefighters led by Officer-In-Charge, IrwandyTugor who is assisted by Sengiang Usat.

Also present at the event were Kapit District Officer, Elvis Didit, Director of Kapit Hospital, Dr Hii King Ching, Officer in charge of Kapit Department of Unity and National Integration Office, Latifah Attong, heads of departments and local community leaders.
