KUCHING: More than 700 participants comprising school principals, headmasters, teachers and students from 83 Trust School nationwide and education officers participated in the 2018 Trust School Conference at Riverside Majestic Hotel here from July 30 until August 1, 2018.

Speaking during the closing ceremony at the hotel yesterday, Director of Daily School Management Division Shaari Osman said that in the present era, having only knowledge was not enough as the younger generations needed other aspects to compete in the global world.

“There are many other aspects that needed to be applied to our children because if they depend only on their academic success, I’m confident that they will not be appreciated in the 21st century.

“We have many other things that we need to give attention to which include proper ways to communicate, have the ability to speak in more than two languages, able to apply positivity and learning skills, and the most important thing to survive is the thinking skills which allow our children to think creatively and critically as both encourages them to make decisions or solve problems in a more effective manner,” he pointed out.

He added that education needed to correspond with the needs of the 21st century.

“Knowledge alone is not enough because job markets are always changing.

“The more modern our world, the more we can see that old jobs being destroyed because of the appearance of new jobs. For example, we no longer need a typist because the computer can do that,” he said.

He also said that these were the challenges that educators needed to face and the ability to adapt to new environment was crucial for educators to instil among the present younger generations.

At the same event, SMK Pulau Indah from Selangor was awarded the champion of Yayasan Amir Cup Social Business challenge and went home with RM3,000 and a trophy.

The first runner up went to SMK Pengkelan Berangan, Terengganu who won RM2,000 while the second runner up went to SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Selangor who went home with RM1,000.
