KPA aims to achieve better throughputs

KUCHING: Kuching Port Authority (KPA) is confident of achieving better throughputs in 2018, its chairman Dato’ Awang Bemee Haji Pengiran Ali Basah said. Awang Bemee was optimistic on Malaysia and the State’s economy, with the dredging of the Sarawak River to commence soon, the Digital Free Trade Zone being set up and the normalisation of border trade at the Tebedu Entikong Post.

He disclosed that an allocation of RM400 million had already been approved by the federal government for the dredging project and the money will be disbursed over an 18-month period.

Speaking at KPA’s Year End Appreciation and Cer tificate Presentation Ceremony 2017 held at its premises yesterday, Awang Bemee said in terms of performance, KPA is expected to handle about 8.65 million tonnes of cargo for 2017, a decrease of 5.6 per cent from last year, mainly from general cargo while container throughput decreased slightly by 0.85 per cent, estimated to register 221,800 TEUs by end of 2017.

Awang Bemee hoped that the staff would continue to give their support and cooperation in realising KPA’s aspiration to achieve better throughput in 2018. He urged for everyone to strife for higher productivity and operation efficiency to make up for the decrease in throughput. In social and cultural events, this year was an eventful one for the port when it won the Sayembara Dekon Perkhidmatan Awam Piala Ketua Menteri 2017.

Together with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation, KPA participated in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) from March 21-25. A contingent of 41 staff was sent to take part in the state-level Head of State’s (TYT) 81st Birthday Celebration parade on Sept 9.

KPA also held its Integrity Day on Oct 17 to inculcate the work culture and value of integrity among the staff. In addition, the KPA Customers’ Day was held on Oct 27 to promote better business relationship and networking with all stakeholders. In term of corporate social responsibility (CSR), KPA had organised three blood donation drives this year to enable staff to donate to save life.

Awang Bemee stressed that in today’s fast changing, challenging and competitive economy, productivity and operation efficiency were essential to achieve competitive advantage. Towards this end, KPA had provided 21 internal and 69 external training programmes comprising talks, courses, seminars and workshops for staff throughout the year. He urged the staff to enhance their IT capabilities so as to complement the State government’s drive towards a digital economy.

Awang Bemee also announced a special incentive payment equivalent to one month’s basic salary or a minimum of RM2,000, to all the staff by the end of this month. KPA has a total of some 750 staff members. At the event yesterday, 21 retired employees received Certificate of Appreciation. Meanwhile, 22 employees were presented with certificates of excellence while another 54, certificates of attendence in various courses. The e vent ye s te rday was also attended by the KPA Board Members – Haji Rahmatullah bin Haji Morshidi and Asem anak Linkin; and KPA’s General Manager Robert Lau.
