MIRI: Twenty six local premises have been inspected since June 1, following the nationwide removal of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Miri Branch Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) Chief, Joe Azmi Jamil, disclosed that inspections were conducted in line with the implementation of zero-rated GST and to ensure that business owners comply with the given directive.

“We also received two complaints of shop owners still imposing GST on their products or items,” Joe Azmi explained during the inspection held at a shopping mall at Jalan Post here on Saturday.

He added that the ministry would continue to monitor the situation so that no shop owners would take advantage of consumers during this period.

Joe Azmi said that during their inspection at a premises in Permyjaya, they discovered that one of the shop’s cashier machines had yet to be adjusted to the zero-rated GST system. The owner told the KPDNKK personnel that he had overlooked the machine.

“We have given the owner three days to adjust,” he added.

Another complaint was also received from an eatery in Luak. The outlet was also given three days to adjust its system.

Joe Azmi welcomes complaints from consumers on the GST issues. They can file their complaints at the Miri KPDNKK office or via the Ez ADU KPDNKK application by uploading proofs of purchases or receipts.

“Consumers can come to our office or call up 085-412862 to lodge reports against errant traders,” he said.

“It would be better if consumers can meet up with us directly and lodge their complaint, instead of making them go viral via social media,” he added.
