KUCHING: Local councils must keep public expectation on par with their services as they are the front line of the government, said Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“The people are their customers and their expectations of the services provided by the local council must be address properly.

“For Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), teamwork is essential and everybody must do their part in accomplishing the team’s vision and mission.

“If anyone is slacking, the rest of the team will be affected and the public will blame the government for it,” said Sim in his speech at MPP’s 22nd anniversary celebration held at MPP headquarters in Kota Padawan, yesterday.

He added that was why the Whatsapp application was launched last year for the public to forward their suggestions, constructive feedbacks and advice on how to improve the council services.

Meanwhile, Sim said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government will continue to prioritise on rural development in the State.

That is why, he stressed, MPP has been divided into three parts – Urban, Sub-Urban and Rural areas, as the priority on rural development is throughout Sarawak.

“For that reason, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has always mentioned about Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), which means development in the rural areas.

“He has set aside certain funds for rural development. This means those living in the rural areas are not being neglected by the GPS government,” said Sim, adding that Abang Johari wanted to see that the standard of living in the rural areas is on par with those in the urban areas.
