MUKAH: Locals welcome the news of the staging of the Sarawak Cup in this division.

If the event were to materialise it would be the first time that this division hosts the prestigious football tournament.

“Although Mukah as a district has hosted the tournament in 1989 it has not done so since its elevation to a division in 2002. Now the tournament has become a biennial sporting event,” said Secretary of Mukah Division Football Association (MuFA), Herman Bong.

He disclosed this when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune on the intention of Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) to stage the football tournament in Mukah.

“I should say that in principle we agree to host the Sarawak Cup, but we have yet to receive any official letter from FAS on the matter. In fact, in the past our President, Nawabdeen has also indicated interest in bringing the football tournament to Mukah,” he said.

Bong added that following the development, they might consider not only using the just completed new Mukah Mini Stadium but also other fields in the area namely, Polytechnic Mukah, UiTM Mukah Campus and Padang Mesra MDDM.

“We may hold a meeting this Friday and we also expect FAS officials to come down to inspect these football fields,” Wong said.

Local football followers in general are very excited on the staging of the Sarawak Cup here because in 1989 when Mukah District hosted the tournament it emerged champion and retained it when Kapit hosted the tournament the following year.

FAS Secretary-General Razali Dorhan has recently revealed that the Sarawak Cup would be held in Mukah by the end of October believing that by that time the participating division teams would be well prepared for the tournament.
