LOKMAN, ZULAIKAH out to defend titles

KUCHING: Entries are now open for the 5th Sarawak Grand Golf Championship 2018 which will be held Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC), Santubong on July 20 to 22. This was announced by DGCC general manager, Roslan Mohd Salleh who said the defending champions in the men’s and ladies categories, namely Mohd Lokman Mustaffa and Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser are expected to participate in the three-day event.

“Entries for the prestigious event are now open and we are encouraging those who are interested to register early to avoid any disappointment,” he said on the event which is being held at DGCC for the second consecutive year.

“We are optimistic for last year’s winners namely Mohd Lokman and Zulaikah are coming back to defend their titles in the men’s and ladies’ respectively,” Roslan said on the top golfers who are vying for the late Pehin Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem challenge trophy in men’s category and Puan Sri Dato Hajah Jamilah Anu challenge trophy in ladies’ category.

According to him, the closing date for entries is on July 13 and the tournament will be decided by stroke play over three rounds of 18 holes on each day and is subjected to the organising committee’s decision in the event of circumstance which makes the playing of 54 holes impracticable, to cancel any round at its discretion.

The top 36 golfers with lowest gross scores over the first 36 holes will qualify for the final round to be held on July 22. The tournament is open to men and ladies amateur golfers players who are having a maximum current NHS/USGA handicap index of 13.2 (course handicap 14) and below for men’s category and 34.9 (course handicap 36) and below for ladies’ category.

DGCC are expecting local golfers and from other states will also be visiting the club for the Grand Charity Golf Tournament 2018 which is scheduled to be held after the fasting month and for this year’s edition of SEDC Sarawak Chairman Cup.

On top of that, the club will be hosting the annual Arnold Palmer Memorial Classic 2018, DGCC Inter-Team Golf Tournament 2018, Sarawak Inter-Club Golf Tournament 2018, Sabah-Sarawak SGA Cup 2018 and Damai Masters Golf Tournament 2018. Meanwhile, response for the May edition of DGCC’s Monthly Escalation Medal tournament had been encouraging with 60 members taking part in the event which was won by Nazrul Iman Nasaruddin in the gross category and Abang Madzlan Abang Adenan in the nett category.

Nazrul Iman finished first placing in the gross category after he carded a six over par 78 while Awang Madzelan came in second with 85 strokes and finishing in third placing was Reta Bujang. Finishing in fourth placing was Khalid Hamid with 87 on countback while Awang Sani Seruji came in sixth placing. Abang Madzlan carded an impressive seven under par 65 to finish first in the nett category while Mohd Jais Daud came in second with four under par 68 and finishing in third placing was Zulkarnain Rosli with two strokes adrift.

In the invited guests category, Dato’ Kho Kak Beng emerged as the winner after he carded a two under par 70 while Dato’ Ngieng Ping Wei finished second with one stroke behind. De p u t y g e n e r a l ma na g – er of Sarawak State Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Edwin Abit finished third placing 72 strokes while president of Sarawak Golf Association (SGA), Hoan Kee Hock came in fifth with 77 strokes.
