MIRI: Many low-lying areas in the city and Sibuti have been flooded following a non-stop 10-hour heavy downpour which started since 2am yesterday.
Chief of Miri Fire and Rescue Department, Supt Law Poh Kiong said that there was no evacuation so far and the firemen would be on standby.
“Our men will continue to monitor the situation,” he added.
Law also revealed that a team of firemen has been mobilised to the PLKN Camp Sungai Rait to assist flood victims within the area.
According to the Head of the State Disaster Relief Committee secretariat, Major (Rtd) Ismail Mahedin, the rain started at about 2am and several areas have been flooded.
He said, “The affected areas are Kampung Mei Min, Taman Tunku residential area, Rumah Lepong Ajai, Pujut Padang Kerbau, Jalan Tanjong Lobang Miri, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lepong Ajai, PLKN Camp Sungai Rait, and Kampong Luak Bay.”
A landslide was also reported to have happened at Kampung Mei Min, Mile 6 and a half, Jalan Miri-Bintulu.
Meanwhile, a longhouse – Rumah Bakom, Mile 70, at Jalan Miri-Bintulu was reported to have been affected by the storm following the heavy downpour.
Nearby Lambir Hills National Park along Jalan Miri-Bintulu, the water level was still high forcing vehicles to do a detour.
Road users have been reminded to use the Miri coastal road instead of Jalan Miri-Bintulu.
