KUCHING: India Street Pedestrian Mall here must come up with more lively activities and programmes, suggested Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Programmes such as the ongoing ‘Celebration of Foods, Arts, and Crafts’ should be organised more frequently, perhaps on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

“We need something like this from time to time to bring in the crowds, push up the businesses there as well as to make Kuching a livelier place,” said Karim.

The Minister said this when attending the ‘Celebration of Foods, Arts, and Crafts’ event at India Street Pedestrian Mall, yesterday.

He also hoped that India Street Pedestrian Mall president Datuk Wee Hong Seng could come out with proposal for the mall activities and bring it up to his ministry.

“There should be something going on in this street. We do not want to see the shops here closed after 6 or 7pm.

“It is such a waste to have this place closed in the evening. We need to work together to make it alive,” said Karim.

The second edition of the ‘Celebration of Foods, Arts, and Craft’ was organised by Sarawak Culinary Heritage and Arts Committee with the aim of promoting traditional delicacies of the various ethnicities in the State.

The event also features about 50 participants from across the State promoting their traditional foods, arts, and crafts, and is a prelude to the World Rainforest Music Festival (WRMF) 2018.

Also present at the event yesterday were the Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, India Street Pedestrian Mall Committee chairman Datuk Wee Hong Seng, event organising committee member Datin Dona Wee, and other distinguished guests.
