SIBU: An owner of a premises was arrested after he tried to bribe a raiding team for having in his possession 3,800 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM90,000.

Commanding officer of the 10th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF), Supt Sanudin Isa said the owner of the building had offered the raiding team RM3,000 as an inducement for them not to take action against him for the alleged offence.

According to Supt Sanudin the raiding team comprised seven GOF officers, eight policemen and three Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) officers.

The operation codenamed “Ops Libas” was conducted at a premises in Jalan Sie Poi Kieng at 8.15pm on Wednesday.

He said when the team arrived at the scene, the suspect was asked to open a room on the upper floor.

“However as he did not have the keys, he had to break open the door,” he said.

He told this to reporters at a press conference held at 10th Battalion General Operations Force, Lanang Camp here, yesterday.

He further explained that inside the room were 38,000 cartons of cigarettes in 76 boxes.

Supt Sanudin added that the GOF team then asked the suspect to show documents to prove ownership of the cigarettes.

“However, the man failed to furnish any and instead took out RM3,000 and offered it to the leader of the raiding team to solve the case,” he said.

Earlier at 5pm the same day, another GOF team and police seized RM250,000 worth of smuggled beer from a store at Jalan Wong King Hou here.

The team also detained a 20-year-old businessman on the spot for further investigation.

Supt Sanudin said they would refer the contrabands which was the biggest so far this year to the Royal Customs Department for its further actions.
