KUCHING: The Ministry of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing is responsible for pre-school education while the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research is responsible for primary education up to higher education.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah explained this to the press attending the DUN pre-council meeting held at PBB headquarters at Jalan Bako here yesterday.

“The pre-school education is under my ministry while the primary school education up to higher learning is under the new Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research led by Dato Sri Michael Manyin,” she added.

Fatimah pointed out that the changes did not affect the government focus or commitment to improve education in the state.

The Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg, she said, had a “very clear direction” on how the state would move forward.

She added the Chief Minister decided to establish the Education Ministry to solve the issues involving education in the state.

“Sarawak has its own way of solving problems involving education, especially in terms of physical aspects and school buildings.

“The cabinet has been given a clear “picture” of how to move forward with digital economy,” added Fatimah.

She revealed that Manyin had a model (plan) to solve the issues of dilapidated schools in the state.

Fatimah welcomed the appointment of Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali as the Assistant Minister for Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring.

According to Fatimah, Hasidah is the right choice because the Chief Minister requires a specific individual to oversee the legal matters and also the relationships between the state and the federal government in the process of empowerment. She explained that Hasidah was a former lawyer.

“We need someone who is an expert in this field and can report back to us in the cabinet. This has all been planned by the Chief Minister,” Fatimah said.
